Winning Ministry of Defence design
In 2013, Coastdesign designed and oversaw the building of two 9.2m REA (Rapid Response and Environmental Assessment) vessels for the New Zealand Ministry of Defence. These specialist military vessels are an excellent example of Coastdesign’s ability to design a vessel to very specific requirements. These vessels were designed with a removable top enabling them to fit into a C130 Hercules aircraft on a road legal trailer for rapid deployment. Powered by twin Yanmar 370hp engines through Hamilton 274 jet units, these vessels are capable of 40knots and carry a crew of 6.
The Ministry of Defence chose our tender over other international tenders because of our ability to think outside normal parameters and incorporate very exacting specifications. Coastdesign was awarded the Minister of Defence Award of Excellence for the Provision of Excellent Equipment to Defence that year.
Working with the Department of Conservation and Coastguard
Coastdesign has designed a number if vessels for these organisations and also provided consulting services. An example is this 7.5m vessel for use by DoC in the Waikato region. Powered by twin 150hp outboards, it has a top speed of 40knots, a cruise speed of 30+ knots and is surveyed to carry 9 people. This big volume vessel has a beam of 2.9m and exceptional ride and handling qualities. The MSA surveyor at the time commented ‘This is the best vessel of its size that I have driven’.
Coastdesign has also worked closely with Coastguard in a number of regions eg Turangi and Rotorua to provide vessel designs for their unique application.
What our clients say…
Coastdesign has become a crucial partner in numerous projects over the years – from smaller consumer vessels for challenging New Zealand conditions, to larger commercial vessels, including many for export.
Each project has exceeded our expectations and what sets Coastdesign apart is Alan’s attention to detail and the unique design solutions for truly custom projects. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.
